In its efforts to improve on the component of cattle breeding, the Sokoto State government has established a dairy centre in the state.
The dairy centre according to the state Commissioner for Animal Health and Fisheries Development, Professor Abdulkadir Junaidu, has a production capacity of 5,000 litres of both fresh milk and yoghurt daily.
He said the project is designed to buy off milk from farmers in the state, thus, improving the economic well-being and minimizing wastage that is often encountered by dairy farmers across the state.
“The diary plants units are part of our cattle breeding programme. The essence of this dairy unit is to ensure that we collect milk from our cluster farmers and our pastoralists who at times complain of low patronage.
“You can all see now that we have started producing caliphate yoghurt for the first time in the state which we will soon commercialize.
“We have the testing product here and are very satisfied with the level of production and ready to go into partnership with the company that engages in yoghurt and other dairy production.
“This I believe will help us to have sustainability that even after this administration, I am hopeful that this company will be maintained and the programme will be sustained”
He said the company will help add value to the activities of cattle rearing in the state.
“By the time we are done with the artificial insemination across all the 23 local governments in the state, our farmers will add value to their cattle.
Meanwhile, the state has set up artificial insemination and embryo transfer component of Sokoto cattle breeding at cattle reproduction centre, Rujin Sambo, with the metropolis.
Speaking while declaring the centre open, the National President of Veterinary Council of Nigeria, AIG Dr Aishatu Abubakar Baju, commended Sokoto State for the projects.
She said such projects are some of the reasons why incidence such as insurgents, banditry, kidnapping and other insecurity issues were on the low side in the state.
She said if other states can emulate such a developmental plan in cattle breeding, insecurity will surely reduce to the barest minimum in the state.
She said only Lagos State consumes about an 81Billion naira worth of cattle on a monthly basis which she described as a big market for cattle business in the country.
She however assured that of presenting a case for the state at the council for the establishment of a centre for Veterinarian College in the state.
