Maca, scientifically known as Lepidium Meyenii, is the root of a vegetable native to the Andes region of Peru. It is known as “Peruvian ginseng,” even though it doesn’t belong to the same botanical family as ginseng.
It comes from a family of vegetables called cruciferous vegetables. Maca contains glucosinolates which are plant compounds that are being studied for their role in cancer prevention.

A RICH SOURCE OF NUTRITION
Maca root is a good source of carbs, is low in fat, and contains a fair amount of fibre. It is also high in some essential vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin C, copper, and iron.
BOOSTS FERTILITY IN MEN
When it comes to male fertility, sperm quality and quantity are very important. There is some evidence that maca root increases men’s fertility.
Several studies have proven Maca to be useful at improving semen quality in both infertile and healthy men. A particular study tested 69 men diagnosed with mild asthenozoospermia and/or mild oligozoospermia. After consuming maca for 12 weeks, researchers detected an improvement in the concentration of semen.
MACA CAN IMPROVE THE MOOD
A 2015 study found that taking maca twice daily for 12 weeks helped with sexual dysfunction in women taking antidepressants. It has also been associated with reduced anxiety and symptoms of depression, particularly in menopausal women.
Maca contains plant compounds called flavonoids which have been suggested to be at least partly responsible for these psychological benefits.
REDUCES PROSTATE SIZE
The prostate is a gland only found in men. Enlargement of the prostate gland, a larger prostate can cause various problems with passing urine, as it surrounds the tube through which urine is removed from the body.
Interestingly, few studies suggest that red maca reduces prostate size. The effect of red maca on the prostate is linked to its high amount of glucosinolates. These substances are also associated with a reduced risk of prostate cancer

HOW TO USE MACA
Maca is easy to incorporate into the diet. It can be taken as a supplement or added to smoothies, oatmeal, juices, and more.
The dosage of maca root powder used in studies generally ranges from 1.5–5 grams per day.

Maca is considered safe for most people. However, if one is down with thyroid issues, pregnant, or breastfeeding, such a person needs to be careful and talk with the healthcare team if he or she is considering maca supplementation.
