Chelsea lose more grounds, draw Wolves at Molineux

A depleted Chelsea fought hard to earn a point at a foggy Molineux, securing a first clean sheet in seven games in the process.

With several players missing due to COVID-19 and injury, and Thomas Tuchel only able to name four outfielders on the bench, the Blues dominated possession and territory against a deep-lying Wolves side.

Creating chances proved tricky but as the contest wore on, the Chelsea threat increased, and only a super stop from Jose Sa in the hosts’ goal prevented Christian Pulisic from grabbing a late winner.

Aside from a Wolves goal disallowed for offside and one relatively comfortable Edou Mendy save before the break, Chelsea, led by Rudiger, looked assured at the back which will please Tuchel after recent rearguard issues.

The return of N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic after injury was a further boost for the Blues.

Thomas Tuchel mentioned after the game that he doesn’t care about the point, he is just happy with the performance of his team providing the circumstances.

However, the German still wanted to re-iterate in his post-match press conference that he is not happy with the protection of the players during these times.

” I gave my opinion. The club gave its opinion. We talk a lot about the safety and about protecting the players.

I’m not so sure if we did this today but on we go.

It will hopefully stop but it is more or less hoping. If we have tomorrow and the next test and the next positive, I would like to speak to the people from Premier League about what they expect it to be.

Should we stop and not arrive in the next game if we were made to play, will they make us play against Brentford, shall we not arrive? Or shall we not train anymore?

What shall we do?

Pending a Covid-enforced postponement, Chelsea are next in action at Brentford on Wednesday in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.
