University of Ilorin’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine on Wednesday inducted a total number of 33 young veterinary doctors into veterinary medicine practice.
Speaking during the third induction/oath-taking ceremony of the young vets in Ilorin, the president, Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN), Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Aishatu Abubakar Baju, said that the veterinary medicine practice provides immense employment opportunities that cut across different federal and state government agencies, organizations as well as private practice.
The VCN president, who said the council would protect the interest of the young graduates, added that it is working on policies as well as collaborating with Government and non-Governmental agencies towards providing employment and other necessities for young Vets either in public or private sectors of the economy.
“Rest assured that the VCN under my watch will strive to protect your interest as young Vets. We are working on policies as well as collaborating with Government and non-Governmental agencies geared towards providing employment and other necessities for young Vets either in public or private sectors of the economy.
“Council is also making efforts towards providing an adequate and sustainable regulatory framework to enable Animal Healthcare practitioners to provide needed services and support to government at all levels in ensuring a healthy people and nation. These laws when promulgated will further strengthen animal disease control, improve food safety and hygiene in our abattoirs, and wholesomeness of foods of animal origin,” she said.
Also speaking, the vice-chancellor of the University, Professor Sulyman Age, represented by the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Professor Olanrewaju Adedoyin, charged the young graduates to make the university proud by being exemplary in their conduct.
“To whom much is given, much is expected. Because we know we have given you the best training, the kind you might not get anywhere else in this country, we expect you to go out there and make us proud. I am confident that with the caliber of people and facilities you had passed through, I am bold to say that we have not only built you all as capable veterinarians but that we have also built-in you moral values that will definitely strengthen the ethics that will direct your practice and career.
“So, we don’t expect you to disappoint us in any way. We urge you to be exemplary in your conduct by upholding the dignity of the veterinary profession.”
In his speech, the Dean, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Ilorin, Professor Moshood Raji, reminded the young Vets never to stop learning and never to forget that veterinary medicine is an art practised by doctors of veterinary medicine.
The dean also expressed the hope that the graduates would live up to expectations, praying that they would be good ambassadors of the university by adhering to the ethics of the profession.
The Kwara State Governor, represented by his deputy, Mr. Kayode Alabi, said that the state government is partnering with the French government on reviving the agricultural sector in the state
The governor also charged the graduates to be hard-working, exhibit good character and maintain good relationships to attain greatness.
