On 23rd March 2021, the China labour law expert, Jeannette Yu and Sophy Wang with CMS China, hosted a webinar tagged: “The Future is Now: The New World of Work in China”, this meeting explores the impact of home working in China for both employers and employees.
Sophy Wang, an Associate with CMS China, explained that remote work was not commonly practised in China before the COVID-19 pandemic, the discussion at the webinar are: (a) Work from home VS. Office (b) Staff mobility (c) New health safety measure and (d) Digitalization: impact of technology.
The report from KPMG tax and advisory leaders in the United States stated that the remote work trend has accelerated the need for the evolution of global mobility such that companies that react and adapt quickly will find business as usual, while others may struggle.
Remote work was seen as extraordinary work before, but it is now considered permanent in many organisations operating model frameworks, as a result, the new reality is a world where we focus on the work, instead of where it happens.
Some parts of Nigeria are yet to face the realities of remote work, meanwhile, the sudden change in the world that came as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic has compelled most organisations to adopt the idea of remote work as the only alternative.

A person that leaves his or her house for the workplace in the morning and returns in the evening is seen as hardworking and responsible, but this is gradually changing with the emergence of remote work.
Some Nigerians cannot still believe the possibility of doing some office work at home, but digital and tech industries find it easy and better. Businesses that are just springing up in Nigeria now embrace remote work as the new normal because it reduces the daily running of the business; it reduces capital cost, it increases efficiencies and it is flexible enough. Some employers now prefer employees that can work remotely.
Remote work is the future of work in the world, especially with the aid of technology, going to a physical workplace dedicated to a particular organisation is gradually becoming obsolete.
