Pandemonium as PDP holds parallel congresses in Oyo

No fewer than 100 vehicles including that of a popular television station, Muri International Television (MITV), were destroyed by unknown but suspected political thugs at a factional congress held at Jogor Centre, Ibadan.

Also, a 60-year-old man, Mr Omolaja Alao, Chairman PDP Ward 1, Ibadan North Local Government, was matcheted on the head by the attackers at the venue.

The incident happened despite the heavy presence of policemen that were on the ground to provide security at the venue.

It was learnt that the same venue had earlier been attacked by the same gunmen this morning before the participants arrived at the venue for the congress.

Speaking on the development, a chieftain of the party, Alhaji Adebisi Olopoeniyan, described the incident as barbaric, stressing that there was no justification for the attack on them by the attackers.

He, however, said that he was happy that the party structure has been taken over by the genuine leaders and stakeholders who are the original owners of the party, stressing that he was sure that was the basis for the attack.

At the said congress, a former Majority Leader, Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Michael Okunlade, emerged as the State Chairman of the faction while Hon. Mathew Adegboyega Abioye was elected as the Vice-Chairman. Hon. Abioye was also a two-term lawmaker in the Oyo State House of Assembly.

Others that emerged at the Congress include Mr Oyesola Abiodun, Secretary; Mr Sakariya Taofeek, Treasurer; Arinola Akeem, Financial Secretary; Alhaji Bolatito Akinyemi, Publicity Secretary; Barr. Ayoade Adewale, Legal Adviser, while Adekola Adeoye and Mrs Lateefat Latifu emerged as the Youth Leader and Women Leaders among others.

In his acceptance speech, Hon. Michael Okunlade said what they have done today was to rescue the party from opportunistic predators and promised not to let the party and his supporters down.

Other leaders from the faction that attended the congress include Hon. Ajibola Muraina, member Federal House of Representatives; former Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Alhaji Hazeem Gbolarumi; Hon. Mulikat Adeola Akande, Hon. Yemi Aderibigbe, the immediate past Special Adviser to Governor Makinde on Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Hon. Ademola Omotosho, Alhaji Mikail Aborode, former Commissioner for Environment, Alhaji Nureni Akanbi Engr Popoola Olukayode Joshua and Engr Femi Babalola respectively.

Meanwhile, the congress being held by the faction led by the Oyo State Governor, Engr Seyi Makinde is ongoing at Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, Ibadan.
