Athletics Supporters Club of Nigeria takes the shine as AFN All-Comers ends in Lagos

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN, 2nd All Comers championship ended in Lagos over the weekend with the Athletics supporters club headlining the news at the 2-day event.

The Athletics championship, held at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Ground in Yaba, Lagos state, was to serve as selection trials for home-based athletes for the 22nd African Senior Athletics Championships holding from 8 to 12 of June, 2022 in Mauritius as well as the preparation for Nigeria’s athletes with the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, United Kingdom fast approaching.

Speaking to news men after the competition, Samuel Onikeku, the technical director of the AFN declared that the organizers aims have been achieved.

“The AFN All-Comers competition has afforded some athletes the opportunity to achieve the qualification standard for future Championships. The last of such opportunities as the window was closing this weekend.

‘The bulk of the team that will represent Nigeria at the African Championships will be home-based athletes and this competition has afforded the federation the chance to select those who will go to Mauritius in June”, the technical director further added.

The Secretary General of the AFN, Prince Adisa Adeniyi was full of praises for the Athletics Supporters Club of Nigeria for their relentless support from the stands all through the 2-day competition.

“You can see that this year’s edition has been more colorful than the previous ones and that is because of the turn out of the fans and particularly the supporters club. Their colour and attire is unique and the music and dancing gave the event even much bigger vibes. We are grateful to them”, the Secretary-General enthused.

The president of the Athletics Supporters Club of Nigeria, Olutoye Orishabiyi also spoke about their passion for the sport.

Different states, clubs, Military and Para Military and other institutions participated in the competition.
