2023: Why we want Ohuabuwa as Nigeria’s next President – Haruna, National President, Arewa Political Group

As politicians across Nigeria prepare for the 2023 general elections, the National President of Arewa Political Group in Nigeria, Alhaji Umar Imam Haruna, has said if the country truly desires genuine change that will bring about accelerated development, politicians from different political groups should allow the presidency to be zoned to the South East and the only person that qualifies from that zone is no other person than Pharmacist Sam Mazi Ohuabuwa.

Haruna stated this in an exclusive interview with Rulers’ World on the reason why his group is agitating for the presidency to be zoned to the South-Eastern part of the country.

According to him, “Our aims and objectives are very clear. The North has spent 38 years right from 1960 when the country became independent after the military coup in 1966. It was the military that first ruled followed by a democratically elected government but what we are seeing is that things are not moving well in this nation. We have to look for a change. I believe the change will come from God and also we should look from Igbo extraction to have somebody to contest the President of this country in the person of Mazi Ohuabuwa.

“We are saying we are one Nigeria, if we are one Nigeria then the leadership should not be one-sided; Yoruba has spent eight years during the administration of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and after his tenure, power returned to the North again. But the way these political leaders used to run the affairs of their political parties is what used to create a lot of problems in the polity. They will sit down, sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that the power will shift from the geo-political zone where the current President is to another geo-political zone at the end of the tenure of the incumbent President. However, if the tenure of that President is coming to an end then the music will change. It shouldn’t be like this.

“We cannot continue with this move in this country. We want change. Look at what is happening in the North, General Muhammadu Buhari, the President today said a lot which made Nigerians have a 100 per cent hope in him that by God’s grace when he came to power things will change but the reverse has been the case. Things are getting even worse than before. This is why we want Sam Mazi Ohuabuwa, a complete technocrat, a man who has the fear of God to come out to let the world know that he can do it and he has the ability to do it. That is our objective”.

On the steps being taken to realise their objective especially in the North, Haruna, who is also the Sardauna of Otta in Ogun State, said he together with Pharmacist Mazi Ohuabuwa, have been linking up with some Northern Senators and political leaders and have been having a very interesting meeting with them.

“The North has to be actively involved because he cannot realize his ambition in the South alone. We are not talking of the political parties we are looking for who deserves the cap. Millions of youths are suffering; you graduated from university with no job and this has been like that for a long time. So we pray to God to bring an end to this.”

Pharmacist Ohuabunwa, is the President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), President of, Association of Corporate Governance Professionals of Nigeria (ACGPN) and the Convener of the New Nigeria Group (NNG).

He is one of the few living Nigerians that have received three National Honours – Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) in 2001, Officer of the Order of Federal Republic (OFR) in 2011 and the National Productivity Order of Merit (NPOM) award in 2018.
