University of Ilorin yesterday announced Professor Wahab Egbewole as its next Vice Chancellor.

Professor Wahab Olasupo Egbewole was nominated by the Governing Council of the institution to succeed Professor Abdulkarim Age, whose tenure ends on October 15, 2022.

Egbewole would become the 12th Vice Chancellor of the University on 15th of October 2022 when he resumed office.

Chairman of the Governing Council, Mallam Abdu Yazid made this announcement during press conference at the Council Chamber of the institution on Thursday.

Yazid , noted that the selection process that began in March this year has ended with the announcement of Professor Egbewole as Abdulkarim’s successor.

He noted that at the start of the application process, twenty nine candidates had sought to get appointed as the institution’s next Vice Chancellor while efforts were made to also encourage some other people to apply.

Yazid said thirteen candidates were later shortlisted adding that it took the committee four days to double-check their credentials and interact with them seeking to know if they would sustain commitment to the mission statement and vision of the university.

Yazid noted that qualities sought for before choosing Egbewole as Vice Chancellor-designate include a candidate ‘that would support and be sympathetic to the needs of students at the institution , who would interface and work smoothly with other faculty members while being mindful of the needs and aspirations of the community where the institution is located’.

Such a candidate, he added, must be truly concerned about the progress of the university and its responsibility to the country.

Egbewole would be the first Senior Advocate of Nigeria and the first Osun state citizen to serve as head of the institution since its establishment in August, 1975.

Egbewole became a Senior Advocate of Nigeria in 2018 .

The university was established by a decree of the federal military government in August 1975.
