Once upon a time, a goat herder led his flock to graze. Few minutes after feeding, the herder noticed that his goats were behaving strangely, bleating excitedly as though on heat. This kept happening for days until the herder came to realise that a particular plant in that area was responsible for the sexual stimulation of the mammals. Not knowing what the plant is called, the herder named it HORNY GOAT WEED.
Horny Goat Weed has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine. Various related species are said to have aphrodisiac properties. For this reason, the plants are employed to treat impotence, as well as to increase libido or sexual desire. Its botanical name is Epimedium. It is also called barrenwort, rowdy lamb herb, randy beef grass, and brain tonic of the immortals (funny one).
A study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine investigated its effects on rats and found out that rats treated with purified extract of Horny Goat Weed showed improved erectile function.
Another study found that icarin, the substance in Horny Goat Weed inhibits the activity of the PDE5 that’s blocking dilation of the arteries in the penis. This allows blood to fill the arteries and the three cylinders in the penis and create an erection. The prescription medication sildenafil (Viagra) works in much the same way.
Horny Goat Weed has other medical properties apart from reviving men’s mojo. It is sometimes used to improve bone density, treats hypertension, heart disease, bronchitis, atherosclerosis, and even polio. This plant is also used to treat arthritis, as well as chronic pain in the lower body.
It works by smoothing muscle tissue as any strained tissue will get a bit of relief. This gives a great chance of recovering from fatigue, joint pain, and numbness.
How is it used?
Horny Goat Weed is available as a herbal supplement, usually in raw herb, tablet, or capsule form, and is sometimes combined with other herbs such as Yohimbé, Saw palmetto, and maca, among others.
