Algeria pip Ghana 3-0, unbeaten in 40 matches

Mouths were left agape on Wednesday night as Ghana succumbed to a 0-3 loss to Algeria in a pre-AFCON friendly.

The match played at the Education City Sports Stadium in Doha, Qatar, was to test the strength of preparation of both teams for the biennial African tournament which kicks off in Cameroon this weekend.

Algeria got into the lead as early as the 8th minute through French-born Adam Ounas of AS Napoli of Italy after relentless pressure on the West Africans by the Maghreb giants.

Ghana held their own in the game until the 75th minute when things fell apart with an own goal by Jonathan Mensah as barely 3 minutes later, Algeria sealed the win via Islam Slimani, a former Newcastle striker, who now plies his trade in France with Lyon.

To compound the woes of the Black Stars, Winger Fatawu Issahaku appeared to have suffered a serious injury suspected to be a groin issue that might rule him out of the AFCON eventually.

Algeria have now extended their unbeaten run in international football to 40 matches, a world record.
