When The DSS Missed It

The other day, the news media was awash with the news of the arrest of an ex-boyfriend of Nollywood act, Tonto Dikeh by officials of the Department of State Service (DSS).

Tonto Dikeh was said to have written the police through Festus Keyamo, SAN, explaining that her lover, Prince Kpokpogri, is a serial blackmailer who collected about N8 million from her though he has paid N6 million from it to balance N2 million. She was also said to have alleged a threat to her life by her estranged lover.

She further claimed that he (Kpokpogri) planted CCTV cameras in her house to record her nudes which he now threatens her with. DSS was said to have promptly swung into action by effecting the arrest of an erstwhile lovebird.

Now, the question is, how has what transpired between Tonto and Kpokpogri constituted a threat to national security?

For the avoidance of doubt, DSS establishment law is clear as to its function viz (a) the prevention and detection, within Nigeria, of any crime against the internal security of Nigeria; (b) the protection and preservation of all non-military classified matters concerning the internal security of Nigeria; and (c) such other responsibilities affecting internal security within Nigeria as the National Assembly or the President, as the case may be, may deem necessary. This is just one out of many incendiary actions of the secret police in recent years.

The other day it laid siege on the homes of serving judges under the pretence of a sting operation. The operation was carried out without due warrant as prescribed by relevant laws of the land. Ditto for the raid on the Soka, Ibadan home of Yoruba nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo (aka Sunday Igboho). These activities were carried out not just without a warrant but in the dead of the night.

At the height of the issues with the former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole, DSS at some point became involved. He was reportedly grilled by DSS operatives for nine hours after some APC governors alleged that he received bribes during the party’s primary elections across the country.
Reports further alleged that Oshiomhole was also pressured to resign during interrogation by the DSS. The rest, they say, is history.

However, in the instant case, interfering in lovers tiff appears more important to the DSS than tackling insurgency, banditry, and terrorism afflicting the country which the secret police was originally set up to nip in the bud.
