UNCENSORED: Fleecing Subscribers The 9Mobile Way

Emerging Markets Telecommunication Services Ltd. (EMTs), trading as “9mobile”, is a Nigerian private limited liability company. EMTS acquired a Unified Access Service License from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in 2007. The License enables EMTS to provide Fixed Telephony (wired or wireless), Digital Mobile Services, International Gateway Services, and National/Regional Long Distance Services in addition to spectrum assignments in the 900 and 1800 MHz bands.

Quite enticing on the surface, but what is however obtainable, in reality, is certainly not as enticing as it sounds. 9Mobile, like its peers in the industry, continue to devise means of fleecing unsuspecting customers of their hard-earned funds. Take for instance the following scenario.

Not many data subscribers on the 9Mobile network have noticed that they don’t get complete value for their subscription. A subscriber who subscribes for a 7-day plan, for instance, actually has access for only 6 days as such subscription is yanked off after the sixth day. Ditto for all other data plans operated by the company, including the monthly data plan.

For emphasis, a 7-day data subscription on a Monday should expectedly expire the following Monday (7 days). But this is not the case with 9Mobile. A subscriber will be shocked to discover that he/she’s outstanding data will be inaccessible after the sixth day- concerned subscriber will not be able to access available data balance from midnight on Sunday – notwithstanding equally exploitative “grace period” with which an unused data could be rolled-on.

This could easily be dismissed as insignificant. But a critical and detailed appraisal would reveal that subscribers are shortchanged at every data purchase by 24 hours. So a monthly subscriber, for instance, will discover that with each passing month, he/she would be required to renew his/her subscription a day hence, meaning a concomitant subscription for 30 months would translate to a loss of one month!

And to think that this takes place under the watchful eyes of NCC is unfathomable.
