Twitter suspension: Reverse decision now, U.S tells Buhari

U.S tells Buhari Twitter

The United States (U.S) has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to reverse the Federal Government’s decision on Twitter operations in Nigeria, asking him to lift the suspension placed on it.

The United States is increasing the pressure on President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration after the suspension of Twitter in Nigeria.

This was obtained on Wednesday as the US Mission in Nigeria, conveyed the message of a top American official, Samantha Power, to the Federal Government.

The senior diplomat is the current Administrator of the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

Power, who was the 28th US Ambassador to the United Nations from 2013 to 2017, stated, “There are nearly 40M Twitter users in #Nigeria, and the country is home to Africa’s largest tech hub.

“This suspension is nothing more than state-sanctioned denial of free speech and should be reversed immediately. #KeepitOn.”

The Federal Government had last week suspended Twitter operations in Nigeria, citing the “persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence”.

The Federal Government’s action followed the deletion of a controversial civil war post by President Muhammadu Buhari.
