The Instinct Of Dread

The Instinct Of Dread

Fashion comes in different styles and ways, most fashion styles comes per time and it trends for as long as it is acceptable, until something else takes over.

Dread or locs became a fashion style as far back as 500 BCE, but as far back

as 2,500 B.C., the Hindu god, Shiva, wore locs and the ancient Egyptian Pharaohs also wore locs.

Chimere Faulk, an Atlanta-based natural hair stylist and owner of Dr. Locs,

said dreadlocks can be traced to just about every civilization in history.

Jamaicans are known for dread, but they did not invent locs. Back in the 30’s.

The Rastafari Movement was created by Marcus Garvey, a Jamaican political leader, journalist and trail blazer. Meanwhile, Rastafarians are attached to locs, but the hairstyle was worn by various tribes in Africa.

Different people, culture and religion place various meanings to dreadlocks.

Rastafarians believed that the Bible says Jesus will return as the lion of Judah, so they grew their hair into locs to resemble a lion’s mane and the second coming of their powerful leader.

Some believed locs were a symbol of letting go of material possessions and

worldly vanity, while some people believe that the longer your locs are, the closer you are to God.

Dreadlocks were said to be a sign of strength and inner power. Old Testament

tells the story of Samson, who lost his strength once his locs were shaved off.

Dreadlocks can be found in almost every culture, as it appears to be one of

the great antiquity.

From all indications, dreadlocks are indeed a cross-cultural phenomenon. They are found in so many places like the ancient Greek, Samarian, America, Egypt, France, to mention a few.

The origin of dreadlock is probably lost to history, because of its existence in

so many places. Some traditional cultures believe that dreadlocks are worn to manifest supernatural powers and help to conjure spirits, while some people wear dreadlocks as a fashion statement.

The Yorubas in western part of Nigeria refer to dreadlocks as “DADA”. They respect it because they believe that dread possesses supernatural power and so do other cultures believe.
