Real Madrid win Spanish Super Cup

Real Madrid were crowned Spanish Super Cup champions after two goals from Luka Modric and Karim Benzema to win 2-0 against Athletic Bilbao in Saudi Arabia on Sunday.

Real Madrid took the lead in the 38th minute after Rodrygo got past two defenders before passing to Modric, who fired a shot into the net.

Benzema consolidated his lead in the second half with a penalty kick after the assistant VAR spotted a handball from Yerray Alvarez inside the penalty area.

Real were reduced to 10 men three minutes before the end of the match after Eder Militao was sent off for a handball in the net.

Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois brilliantly saved Raul Garcia’s left-footed penalty in the last seconds.

“You can never get tired of winning,” Modric said at a news conference.

“I enjoy the same every title, when you play at Real Madrid you have to win. It’s part of the DNA of this club. The fans expect a lot from you. So now we have to look forward to winning more and more in the next months.”

After two thrilling semi-final matches, the final was a one-sided confrontation, with Real Madrid completely dominating and facing no real danger.

Real Madrid enjoyed the vast majority of support from 30,000 fans at King Fahd Stadium, which had a capacity of 50% due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
