Qatar 2022: Comebacking Netherlands Falter on Spot Kicks, Lose to Argentina in Round of 8

Hours after Croatia and Brazil needed extra time to solve their World Cup semifinal qualification, the Netherlands forced Argentina to do the same.

Down 2-1 in the 100th minute of the contest — the last of the 10 added for stoppage time — Dutch midfielder Teun Koopmeiners lined up for a free kick and the last chance to send the game into extra time.

Instead of challenging Argentina goalie Emiliano Martínez at the net, Koopmeiners opted to pass the ball forward, where Wout Weghorst found the back of the net, tying the game at two, and sending the into extra time.

The euphoria was short-lived, however, with Argentina eventually winning on penalty kicks, 4-3.

Argentina will now face Croatia in the 1st semi-finals in a few days. Croatia won 3-0 against Argentina in a group game at the last World Cup in Russia, 2018.
