Former president of Mali, Ibrahim Keita dies at 76

Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, the former president of Mali who was sacked by the military in 2020 after a turbulent seven-year rule, is dead.

He passed on at the age of 76, according to officials.

It would be recalled that the late former president governed the country from September 2013 to August 2020, when Islamist insurgents overran large areas, draining his popularity.

Keita was consequently forced out by a military coup, the leaders of which still rule Mali despite strong international objections.

According to a tweet from Mali’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdoulaye Diop, “Very saddened to learn of the death of former President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita. It is with great emotion that I bow before his memory.”

As of the time of filing this report, the circumstances that led to the late Keita’s death who died at home in Bamako could not be confirmed.
