FG gives condition to lift Twitter suspension

FG's condition for Twitter, summon on Twitter comments

Federal Government (FG) has given a condition to lift the indefinite suspension of Twitter operations in Nigeria.

The condition was disclosed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, during a meeting with some envoys of the US, UK, Canada in Abuja on Monday.

The minister noted that Twitter’s operations in Nigeria will be restored only if the platform can be used “responsibly”.

Onyeama, when asked when the ban will be lifted, said there is no definite timeline for that, adding that “the condition would be a responsible use of the social media and that really has to be it”.

“We are not saying that Twitter is threatening the country or any such thing; why we have taken this measure is to stop them to be used as platforms for destabilisation and facilitation of criminality or encouragement of criminalities,” the minister stated.

The Federal Government had earlier invited the envoys of the EU, US, UK, and others following their criticism of the Twitter ban.
