D’Tigress suffer heavy defeat to France in Olympic basketball

The Nigerian women basketball team suffered a second straight defeat in the hands of France at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics on Friday morning.

The Afrobasket women champions were routed 87-62 by the French side, ranked number 5 in the world.

Gabby Williams, Engine Miyem, Marine Johannes, and Alix Duchet each added 13 points as five players recorded double figures for France.

D’Tigress had put up an impressive showing against Team USA in the opening match of the group despite losing to the U.S by nine points, a performance which raised expectations going into the game with France.

France made an impressive show of dominance in the first quarter by going six points up and further leading by three in the second quarter.

Les Bleues closed the half with a 22-8 scoreline and made it a 44-27 halftime advantage with Williams adding six points and Duchet adding five points.

The 3rd and 4th quarter was complete domination for France as they led the Nigerians all through by 25 points.

Nigeria must now go for an all-out victory against Japan in the last match of the group.
