Court orders resident doctors to suspend strike, return to work immediately

The National Industrial Court, sitting in Abuja has ordered the striking National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) to suspend its 46-day strike and resume work with immediate effect.

Justice Bashar Alkali gave the order while ruling on an interlocutory injunction filed by Toochukwu Maduka (SAN) on behalf of the Federal Government on Friday.

Justice Alkali, however, based his judgment on the prevailing health cases of Nigerians and the need for the striking Resident Doctors to resume duties as essential workers in curtailing the spread of COVID-19 in the country.

The judge in conclusion urged the claimants to grant some if not all of the defendant’s demands at the negotiation table.

He said the case file will be reassigned by the President of the court and a new date for the hearing of the substantive suit will be communicated to parties.

It will be recalled that the NARD had embarked on strike on 2nd August, 2021, demanding that the Federal Government should review the memorandum of understanding and other agreements reached with the body.

But the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Health, filed an application before the NIC on August 20, 2021, seeking an injunction to restrain the striking doctors from continuing with their industrial action.
