Biz woman Docked Over N9.8m Investment Scam

When Mrs Lucy Udoudo was approached sometime in 2017 with investment business, with the promise of 10 per cent interest returns on any amount invested every month she suspected nothing sleazy.

Mrs Udoudo said because of the belief and trust she had for Mrs Patricia Francis Ikpe (37), she agreed to go into the business with her as a partner.

In a petition dated 23rd April 2021 addressed to the Commissioner of Police, Special Fraud Unit (SFU), Milverton Road, Ikoyi, Lagos, endorsed by Mrs Udoudo counsel, Wale Ogunade Esq. of Wale Ogunade Chambers, she further stated that Mrs Ikpe encouraged her to bring more investors into the business and out of her belief and trust, she (Mrs Udo) collected monies from other people (investors) to give to Mrs Ikpe for the business.

As a result of the foregoing, Mrs Udoudo between 2017 and 2019 allegedly made several money transfers to Mrs Ikpe using her Zenith Bank and First City Monument Bank (FCMB) accounts.

“The Petitioner informed us that she equally deposited several sums of money at various times into Mrs Patricia Francis Ikpe’s accounts between 2017 and 2019, (as certified by Mrs Patricia Francis Ikpe and her witnesses on the 11th day of August 2019, attached).

“The Petitioner also informed us that till date, Mrs Patricia Francis Ikpe has failed, neglected and refused to repay the money given to her including the 10 per cent interest promised for the investment despite several demands”, the petition read in part.

The petition further informed the police boss that despite writing a letter of demand dated 14th September 2020 to Mrs Ikpe which was received by her husband on 15th September 2020, she has refused to pay back the said money.

However, on 8th September 2021, Mrs Ikpe was charged before an Ikeja Magistrate Court (Court 9) sitting in Ogba on a three-count charge of obtaining money under false pretence and stealing. In the suit marked MIK/39/2021, she (and others at large,) were accused of ‘fraudulently obtaining the sum of Eight Million, Eight Hundred Thousand Naira (N8,800,000.00) only from Lucy Udoudo under the pretence of investing it on a business that yields ten per cent for her within a short period, a presentation knowing to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 314 of the Criminal Law, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015″.

The third count read this: “that you Patricia Francis Ikpe ” F”, and others at large, on the same date, time and place in the aforesaid magisterial district did steal cash sum of Eight Million, Eight Hundred Thousand Naira (N8, 800,000.00) only property of one Lucy Udoudo “F” by unlawfully converting same to your personal use and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 280 and punishable under Section 287 of the Criminal Law, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.

When the charges were read to Mrs Ikpe in the open court, she pleaded not guilty to all the counts. Presiding Magistrate Afolabi admitted her to bail in the sum of Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N500, 000.00) only and two sureties in like sum. The sureties must possess the National Identification Number (NIN), Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA) number and evidence of three-year tax payment.

The matter was adjourned till 6th October 2021 for commencement of trial.
